Our review

Kawai GL-10 review: our verdict

Short version: the GL-10 is Kawai’s daily driver: the most consistent baby grand we know at this size, with an action built to the same idea as Kawai’s concert instruments.

Kawai uses the Millennium III action in every grand it makes, and the GL-10 gets the same care: even a GL action receives hundreds of thousands of break-in keystrikes and fine regulation before it leaves the factory. The result is an action that’s even and controllable from day one, with the warm, round Kawai sound.

Buy it if you want a real grand for a home, studio or teaching room, with an action a student can grow into and a teacher can trust.

Think twice if bass depth is your priority. At 5’0″, the GL-10 trades some bass warmth for consistency; the GL-20 and GL-30 on our floor give you more length and more bass.

Play it next to its bigger siblings in Atlanta and you’ll know quickly which one your room and your playing need.

Choosing a GL

Kawai GL-10 vs GL-20

The bottom line: the GL-20 adds length, duplex scaling and a third back post for more bass and sustain. The GL-10 is the choice when floor space comes first. Both are on our Atlanta floor.

About The GL-10

The GL-10 baby grand piano is the introductory model in Kawai’s GL series of professional grands, which MMR Magazine named Product of the Year in 2016. The series runs from the GL-10 and the 5’2″ GL-20 baby grands to the 5’5″ GL-30 Classic Grand, the 5’11″ GL-40 Classic Salon Grand and the GL-50 Conservatory Grand. It’s a 5’0″ baby grand with the Millennium III action, longer keys with concert-length key buttons, underfelted mahogany hammer mouldings, a tapered solid spruce soundboard and agraffes on keys 1 to 46.

It’s built for serious students, teachers who want the best balance of price and performance, and players who want a grand at home without giving up the room. We carry it in Polished Ebony, Satin Ebony, Polished Mahogany and Polished Snow White.

The Keys

Every Kawai grand uses the Millennium III action. Its ABS-Carbon parts, Kawai’s ABS Styran infused with carbon fiber, are lighter and stiffer than wood, so the action is faster and more controllable, and it doesn’t swell or shrink with the seasons. Grade-weighted hammers and longer keys, with a taller profile and concert-length key buttons, give an even response whether you play near the fallboard or at the edge of the key.

The Sound

The GL-10’s soundboard is straight-grained, quarter-sawn solid spruce, tapered to get the most tone from it. Underfelted mahogany hammer mouldings give a warm, round attack, and agraffes on keys 1 to 46 hold the strings precisely for clear, focused tone through the bass and tenor.

5‘0″

Five feet long: a real grand that still fits most living rooms.

46

Agraffes on keys 1–46, for precise string termination through the bass and tenor.

10-yr

Kawai’s full 10-year warranty, transferable to the next owner.

The Build

Kawai’s GL series is built around its SOLID structure (Stretcher Over-Lap Integrated Design) and the V-Pro plate, with a pinblock of at least eleven cross-banded layers of North American hard maple.
