Roland FP-40 review: our verdict
Short version: the keys are the same as the FP-30X, and almost everything you hear is better.
Roland kept the PHA-4 Standard action, which is still one of the best actions at this price, and rebuilt the sound around it. My long-standing criticism of the FP series was compressed dynamics: soft and loud didn’t feel far enough apart. The new Piano Reality engine and upward-firing speakers fix that. Loud passages build naturally instead of jumping, soft playing has genuine color, and the sound has space rather than reverb.
Buy it if you’re starting lessons, coming back to piano after years away, or you want a real weighted action that responds to how you play.
Think twice if you rely on 1/4″ studio headphones (you’ll need an adapter for the new 3.5 mm jack) or you want the lightest piano in the class. At 30 lb 14 oz, the FP-40 is a little heavier than its main rivals.
This is the first FP-series piano I’d describe as genuinely musical, not just versatile.

What changed
Roland FP-40 vs FP-30X
If you’re deciding between a new FP-40 and a leftover FP-30X, here’s the honest breakdown.
| Roland FP-40 | Roland FP-30X | |
|---|---|---|
| Keys | PHA-4 Standard, touch re-tuned for the new engine | PHA-4 Standard |
| Sound engine | Piano Reality | SuperNATURAL Piano |
| Speakers | Upward-firing, 12 W × 2 | Conventional layout |
| Polyphony | 256 | 256 |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth audio and MIDI | Bluetooth audio and MIDI |
| Learning app | Piano Sphere | Roland Piano Every Day |
| Headphones | 3.5 mm combo jack (headphone or headset) | 1/4" jack |
The bottom line: the feel of the keys hasn’t changed; the sound and the experience have. A deeply discounted FP-30X is still a solid piano. If you can stretch to the FP-40, the difference in expressiveness is worth it.

About The FP-40
The Roland FP-40 replaces the FP-30X, one of the best-selling digital pianos in its category for the better part of six years — and it doesn’t just coast on that reputation. It keeps the same PHA-4 Standard weighted-hammer action players already trust, then rebuilds everything around it: a new Piano Reality sound engine borrowed down from Roland’s flagship GP-series grand pianos, a completely redesigned upward-firing speaker system, and the first built-in Wi-Fi Roland has put in a digital piano, powering the free Piano Sphere learning app. The result, hands-on, is an instrument that finally rewards playing quietly as much as playing loud — a genuine generational step for the FP line, not just a refresh with new branding.
FP Heritage – Since 1991
Roland’s FP line of digital pianos have accumulated decades of experience with the world’s most demanding musicians. The result? Every FP40 delivers perfect balance, durability, and tone quality into a highly versatile package.
Built for Versatility
Some pianos are best at home. Some are best on the road. Some preferred by beginners, and some by pros. The FP line bridges the gaps, delivering the kind of demanding tone production and functionality required by top musicians around the world, yet easy enough to use and play from your very first piano lesson.
The Keys
The FP-40 carries over the same PHA-4 Standard hammer action as the outgoing FP-30X: fully weighted, escapement-equipped, with Ivory Feel key surfaces and triple-sensor detection for faster repetition and more accurate trills than the dual-sensor actions competitors use at this price. What actually changed is underneath — Roland re-mapped the touch curves in software to match the new Piano Reality engine, and that re-tuning is most of why this piano feels different under your hands, even though the hardware is identical to the model it replaces.
The Sound
The FP-40 runs Piano Reality, a new engine brought down from Roland’s flagship GP-series grand pianos into a portable format for the first time. It’s still fundamentally sample-based, not a full modeling engine, but it borrows modeling-derived elements from those premium instruments for velocity transitions and resonance. Roland paired it with a full speaker redesign: two upward-firing drivers in newly engineered enclosures, with grilles molded directly into the top panel instead of bolted-on inserts, aimed up rather than down or back for a more direct path to your ear and real depth added to the low register.
256
With a total polyphony of 256, the FP40 delivers class-leading capability for the most demanding, multi-layered playing situations. Never lose any sustaining harmonics….ever.
24W
The FP40 features 2 x 12W speakers, entirely redesigned to be upward facing for maximum detail and player immersion. Full, balanced, and great at every volume level.
305
With 305 onboard tones (40 directly from the piano, and an additional 265 accessible from within the app), you’ll have the variety you want to fulfil every creative impulse.
Connectivity
This is the first Roland digital piano with built-in Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth alone, and it’s what makes automatic Piano Sphere syncing possible without pairing a phone every session. In addition, the stereo 1/4″ audio ports, single and triple pedal connections, USB Audio Interface (USB-C) and Bluetooth Audio & Midi make this piano as future-proofed as they come.
USB AUDIO
Stream digital audio straight from your FP40 to your computer for the ultimate in recording convenience.
Bluetooth 5.4
Enjoy stable, high-fidelity audio & data connections with the latest in Bluetooth protocol
Mic & Headphone
A combined 3.5mm headphone and mic port at the front means ultra-convenience access to both features, with onboard mic effects to boot.

Roland FP-40: Frequently Asked Questions
The keybed hardware hasn’t changed. Roland kept the PHA-4 Standard action as-is and built the changes around it: a new Piano Reality sound engine, touch curves re-tuned specifically for that engine, a redesigned upward-firing speaker system, built-in Wi-Fi, and the Piano Sphere learning app. In practice, that combination changes how the piano feels to play, particularly at the quiet and loud ends of the dynamic range, even though the keys themselves are unchanged.
No. Wi-Fi powers the Piano Sphere app experience and background progress tracking. The piano plays and sounds the same with or without a network connection.
Not directly. The FP-40 uses a single 3.5mm combo jack (headphone output plus headset microphone input) in place of the standard 1/4″ jack. A 3.5mm-to-1/4″ adapter, widely available, will let you keep using existing 1/4″ headphones or studio monitors.
Both. Roland’s own positioning targets the “Returning Player” — someone getting back to piano after time away — and it’s also the same action and price point we put our own early-stage students on at the school: it holds up to daily practice and doesn’t punish inexperience. Once a student’s touch develops to the point where acoustic resonance and longer-term touch development matter more than price and durability, that’s a different conversation, and we’ll have it honestly when a student gets there.
Every FP-40 ships with a single sustain pedal and a music rest. The KSF-40 matching furniture stand and the KPD-70 three-pedal unit (which mounts to the KSF-40 for full sustain, sostenuto, and soft pedal control) are sold separately — ask your Merriam Piano Specialist about bundling either one with your piano.
No. Action, engine, and speakers are identical across both finishes (FP-40-BK or FP-40-WH) — color is a cabinet choice only.
The FP-40 carries Roland’s full 3-year US manufacturer’s warranty, serviced through Roland’s US support network. Merriam Music America Inc. is an authorized US Roland dealer, so that warranty applies in full. It may not apply the same way to a piano bought through an unauthorized or gray-market seller.
Yes. If you find the FP-40 advertised for less by an authorized US Roland dealer, send us the link and we’ll match it.
This site is set up for delivery within the continental US, with pricing, tax, and shipping calculated accordingly. We currently ship only to addresses in the contiguous United States.
Every FP-40 ships free anywhere in the continental US, from our warehouse in Indiana, so your piano is coming from US-based stock rather than overseas. Once it arrives, you’re supported by our own team in Atlanta, GA, not a third-party call center.
