Overview
The Roland FP-40 replaces the FP-30X, one of the best-selling digital pianos in its category for the better part of six years β and it doesn’t just coast on that reputation. It keeps the same PHA-4 Standard weighted-hammer action players already trust, then rebuilds everything around it: a new Piano Reality sound engine borrowed down from Roland’s flagship GP-series grand pianos, a completely redesigned upward-firing speaker system, and the first built-in Wi-Fi Roland has put in a digital piano, powering the free Piano Sphere learning app. The result, hands-on, is an instrument that finally rewards playing quietly as much as playing loud β a genuine generational step for the FP line, not just a refresh with new branding.
FP Heritage – Since 1991
Roland’s FP line of digital pianos have accumulated decades of experience with the world’s most demanding musicians. The result? Every FP40 delivers perfect balance, durability, and tone quality into a highly versatile package.
#1 In VERSATILITY
Some pianos are best at home. Some are best on the road. Some preferred by beginners, and some by pros. The FP line bridges the gaps, delivering the kind of demanding tone production and functionality required by top musicians around the world, yet easy enough to use and play from your very first piano lesson.
The Keys
The FP-40 carries over the same PHA-4 Standard hammer action as the outgoing FP-30X: fully weighted, escapement-equipped, with Ivory Feel key surfaces and triple-sensor detection for faster repetition and more accurate trills than the dual-sensor actions competitors use at this price. What actually changed is underneath β Roland re-mapped the touch curves in software to match the new Piano Reality engine, and that re-tuning is most of why this piano feels different under your hands, even though the hardware is identical to the model it replaces.
The Sound
The FP-40 runs Piano Reality, a new engine brought down from Roland’s flagship GP-series grand pianos into a portable format for the first time. It’s still fundamentally sample-based, not a full modeling engine, but it borrows modeling-derived elements from those premium instruments for velocity transitions and resonance. Roland paired it with a full speaker redesign: two upward-firing drivers in newly engineered enclosures, with grilles molded directly into the top panel instead of bolted-on inserts, aimed up rather than down or back for a more direct path to your ear and real depth added to the low register.
256
With a total polyphony of 256, the FP40 delivers class-leading capability for the most demanding, multi-layered playing situations. Never lose any sustaining harmonics….ever.
Read more24W
The FP40 features 2 x 12W speakers, entirely redesigned to be upward facing for maximum detail and player immersion. Full, balanced, and great at every volume level.
305Β
With 305 onboard tones (40 directly from the piano, and an additional 265 accessible from within the app), you’ll have the variety you want to fulfil every creative impulse.
Connectivity
This is the first Roland digital piano with built-in Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth alone, and it’s what makes automatic Piano Sphere syncing possible without pairing a phone every session. In addition, the stereo 1/4″ audio ports, single and triple pedal connections, USB Audio Interface (USB-C) and Bluetooth Audio & Midi make this piano as future-proofed as they come.
USB AUDIO
Stream digital audio straight from your FP40 to your computer for the ultimate in recording convenience.
Bluetooth 5.4
Enjoy stable, high-fidelity audio & data connections with the latest in Bluetooth protocol
Mic & Headphone
A combined 3.5mm headphone and mic port at the front means ultra-convenience access to both features, with onboard mic effects to boot.
