Roland GP-9 review: our verdict
Short version: this is the most immersive piano Roland makes, in a cabinet that holds its own next to an acoustic grand.
The GP-9 shares its heart with Roland’s flagship LX9: the Hybrid Grand action and the Piano Reality Modeling engine. What the grand cabinet adds is space. Eight speakers, fed separately from the engine, wrap the sound around the player with layers of mid-range detail, and it’s remarkably clean even at full volume. Haptic vibration in the keys adds the physical feedback you’d normally only get from a real soundboard.
Buy it if you want a showpiece grand for a living room, studio or venue, with silent practice, recording and no tuning.
Think twice if space is limited. The GP-9 is nearly 5 feet deep and weighs 372 lb, so it needs a grand piano’s footprint and a proper delivery. The GP-6 gives you the same engine in a smaller cabinet.
If you want Roland’s best, without compromise, this is it.

Choosing a GP
Roland GP-9 vs GP-6
Both run the same Piano Reality Modeling engine. Here’s what the step up to the GP-9 buys you.

| Sound engine | Piano Reality Modeling | Piano Reality Modeling |

| Weight | 372 lb 10 oz (169.0 kg) | 200 lb 10 oz (91.0 kg) |
The bottom line: the engine is the same; the GP-9 adds Roland’s best action, haptic feedback, three more speakers and a full grand cabinet. If the room allows it, those are the differences players notice most.

About The GP-9
The GP-9 is the top of Roland’s GP series and, in Roland’s words, its premier grand piano: a large, luxurious cabinet with Roland’s most advanced keyboard and sound system. It combines the Hybrid Grand action, haptic key vibration and the Piano Reality Modeling engine with eight speakers, a variable-height lid with two prop sticks and integrated casters.
It’s built for the rooms where a piano is the centerpiece: living rooms, studios, restaurants and lobbies. For venues that want a self-playing piano, Roland’s GP-9M adds moving keys, professional XLR outputs and a microphone input.
The GP series
Roland’s digital grands run from the compact GP-3 to the GP-9. The GP-9 is the flagship, sharing its action and engine with Roland’s LX9.
Built for a showpiece
Polished Ebony or Polished White, a lid you can raise to two heights, and a cabinet that looks the part next to an acoustic grand.
The Keys
The Hybrid Grand keyboard is Roland’s most advanced action: wood-and-molded keys with progressive hammer action, escapement, Ebony/Ivory Feel surfaces and a long key pivot, so the keys respond evenly whether you play near the front or close to the fallboard. Haptic key vibration adds the subtle feedback you feel through the keys of an acoustic grand. Touch is adjustable in 100 steps, and hammer response in 10.
The Sound
Piano Reality Modeling builds the piano tone in real time, so there’s no limit on piano polyphony and the sound responds continuously to your touch. Eight speakers, including a dedicated center channel, are each fed separately from the engine for a close, enveloping presentation. Damper modeling recreates the bloom of the strings when you pedal, and six ambience settings range from a studio to a cathedral.
8
Eight speakers: spatial, cabinet, center near-field and near-field, each fed separately from the engine.
150W
Rated output of 25 W × 2, 20 W × 2, 15 W × 2 and 15 W × 2 across the speaker system.
324
324 sounds, from concert grand and upright pianos to electric pianos, organs and strings.
Connectivity
Under the lid, the GP-9 is a modern instrument: Bluetooth for streaming and apps, USB for recording and computers, and two headphone jacks for silent practice and lessons.
Bluetooth audio and MIDI
Stream music through the GP-9’s eight speakers, or connect to the Roland Piano App and Piano Designer.
USB audio and recording
Record WAV audio straight to a USB flash drive, or connect to a computer for USB MIDI and audio.
Two headphone jacks
Practice silently, or use Twin Piano mode for lessons with a teacher side by side.
