Our review

Roland GP-6 review: our verdict

Short version: the GP-6 puts Roland’s flagship sound engine and a serious action into a cabinet that looks, and projects, like a baby grand.

Roland’s GP line is essentially its LX upright technology in a grand case. The GP-6 pairs the Piano Reality Modeling engine with the PHA-50, a wood-and-molded hybrid action on a long pivot that classical players tend to feel at home on. Its five speakers fire from the cabinet as well as toward the player, so the sound surrounds you instead of coming at you from one spot. The tone is the Roland signature: dark, warm through the mid-range and close to the player.

Buy it if you want the presence of a grand in a living room, with headphones, recording and no tuning, and you play enough that the action matters.

Think twice if you’re trying to replicate a true grand foot-print. At just 38 inches deep and 200 lb, the GP-6 may have grand elements, but in a large space, the GP-9 form factor may be more appropriate.

For most homes that want a grand silhouette and an action worth practicing on, this is the GP model we’d start with.

The elegance of a baby grand,
without the fuss.

PHA-50 Hybrid Keyboard

Wood-and-molded keys with escapement, Ebony/Ivory Feel surfaces and accelerated key sensing, on a longer pivot than Roland’s entry actions.

Piano Reality Modeling

The piano tone is modeled as you play, so piano polyphony is unlimited and every shade of touch comes through.

Five-speaker Projection

Spatial, cabinet and near-field speakers place the sound around you, the way a grand fills a room.

Choosing a GP

Roland GP-6 vs GP-3

The GP-3 and GP-6 look alike from across the room. Underneath, they couldn’t be more different.

The bottom line: the GP-3 is the right choice when space and budget come first. Choose the GP-6 if you’ll play it (or listen to it) seriously: the modeling engine, the PHA-50 action and the five-speaker system with digital amplification are the difference you’ll hear and feel.

About The GP-6

The GP-6 is the mid-line digital grand piano in Roland’s GP series, which Roland calls its Mini Grand, between the compact GP-3 and the flagship GP-9. It takes the Piano Reality Modeling engine and PHA-50 action from Roland’s premium LX line and puts them in an elegant baby grand cabinet with a working lid, a five-speaker Piano Reality Projection system and 324 sounds.

It’s a piano for people who want a baby grand in the room and a modern instrument under their hands: silent practice on headphones, recording to USB, Bluetooth audio and MIDI, a metronome with 80 rhythm patterns, 10 historical temperaments, and no tuning, ever. Its touch buttons disappear into the panel when the backlighting is off, so the cabinet keeps a clean, acoustic look.

The Keys

The GP-6 uses Roland’s PHA-50 Hybrid keyboard: wood-and-molded keys with progressive hammer action, escapement, Ebony/Ivory Feel surfaces and accelerated key sensing for detailed touch response. The longer key pivot gives a more even response from the front of the key to the back, which is what classical players notice first. Touch sensitivity is adjustable in 100 steps, and hammer response in 10, so you can tune the feel to your playing.

The Sound

Piano Reality Modeling builds the piano tone in real time rather than replaying recordings, so there’s no limit on piano polyphony and the sound responds continuously to how you play. Damper modeling recreates the bloom of the strings when you use the pedal, and the Piano Reality Ambience offers Studio, Lounge, Concert Hall and Cathedral settings. Lift the lid and the five-speaker Projection system opens up, just as an acoustic grand does.

5

Five speakers: two spatial, one cabinet and two near-field, so the sound surrounds the player instead of coming from one point.

100W

Rated output of 25 W × 2, 20 W × 1 and 15 W × 2: enough to fill a living room without strain.

324

324 sounds, from grand and upright pianos to electric pianos, organs, strings and more.

Connectivity

The GP-6 connects to the way people practice and create now: Bluetooth for streaming and apps, USB for your computer and flash drives, and two headphone jacks for duets and lessons.
