Our review

Roland HP702 review: our verdict

Short version: the HP702 is where Roland’s home pianos start to feel like furniture you’d want in the living room, with a sound engine that punches above its price.

Roland’s HP line is for the buyer who, a decade ago, would have bought an acoustic upright. The HP702 pairs SuperNATURAL Piano Modeling, with unlimited piano polyphony, with the PHA-4 Standard action Roland puts in its most popular pianos: firm, even and responsive, with escapement. Add Bluetooth audio and MIDI, two headphone jacks and 392 built-in songs, and it covers everything a family needs from a practice piano.

Buy it if you want a home piano for lessons and daily practice in a cabinet that suits the room, in Charcoal Black, Dark Rosewood, Light Oak or White.

Think twice if you want a fuller sound or a longer action. The HP702 has two speakers and 28 W of output; the HP704 steps up to the PHA-50 action and a 60 W four-speaker system.

For most families starting out, it’s the HP we’d recommend first.

Roland HP702 vs HP704

The same sound engine and features. The step up is the action and the speakers.

The bottom line: the HP702 already has the modeled sound engine. The HP704 is worth the step if you want the PHA-50 action’s longer pivot and a bigger, fuller speaker system.

By the numbers: the HP702 is the lightest, with the most polyphony and the most built-in sounds. The Yamaha CLP-835 has the most amplifier power. The Kawai CA401 is the only one with wooden keys and four speakers. The Kawai CA401 is also available from Merriam, and on the floor at our Atlanta showroom.

About The HP702

The Roland HP702 digital piano is part of Roland’s HP series of home pianos, built for families and students who want a real piano experience without the upkeep of an acoustic. It combines SuperNATURAL Piano Modeling, unlimited piano polyphony and the PHA-4 Standard action in a slim, furniture-style cabinet.

It’s ready for lessons out of the box: 392 built-in songs, including lesson material, a metronome, registrations for saving favorite settings, Twin Piano mode for teacher and student, two headphone jacks, and the Roland Piano App over Bluetooth.

The Keys

The PHA-4 Standard is Roland’s progressive hammer action: heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble, like an acoustic piano, with escapement and Ivory Feel key surfaces. It’s firm and even, with a clear key bottom, and it holds up to years of daily practice. Touch sensitivity is adjustable in 100 steps, with optional hammer response in 10.

The Sound

Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano Modeling builds the piano tone in real time, with unlimited polyphony on piano sounds, so sustained chords and pedaled passages never cut out. In the Piano Designer app you can adjust the lid, hammer noise, key-off noise and duplex scale, and choose from 10 temperaments. Headphones 3D Ambience makes headphone practice sound natural rather than inside your head, and 324 tones cover everything from electric piano to strings.

324

324 tones, from concert grand to electric pianos, organs and strings.

384

Polyphony of 384 notes on non-piano tones, and unlimited on piano tones.

392

392 built-in songs in the US model, including lesson material and Easy Piano pieces.

Connectivity

The HP702 connects to the way families practice now: Bluetooth for apps and streaming, USB for recording, and two headphone jacks.
