Roland LX-5 review: our verdict
Short version: the LX-5 gives you Roland’s best sound engine and its most durable action in a cabinet that fits where an upright would.
The PHA-50 is, in our experience, one of the toughest digital piano actions made: wood sides, a long pivot and a feel classical players settle into quickly. The Piano Reality Modeling engine is Roland at its warmest, with a rich mid-range and real nuance at soft dynamics, and the speakers sit in the cabinet itself, so the sound is open rather than boxed in.
Buy it if you want a premium home piano for serious practice, with a slim footprint and a choice of four finishes, including Light Oak.
Think twice if the action is your top priority: the LX-6 steps up to Roland’s longer Hybrid Grand keyboard and a more powerful five-speaker system for a little more depth.
For most homes, this is the sweet spot between Roland’s HP line and the flagship LX9.

The bottom line: the LX-6 is the step up if touch comes first; its Hybrid Grand action is a longer-pivot version of the PHA-50. The LX-5 is the choice for Roland’s modeling engine in the slimmest LX cabinet, and unlike the LX-6, it comes in Light Oak.

By the numbers: the Yamaha CLP-845 has the most amplifier power and is the lightest. The Kawai CA501 has 88 wooden keys. The LX-5 is the only one with a modeled piano engine and the narrowest of the three. The Kawai CA501 is also available from Merriam, and on the floor at our Atlanta showroom.

About The LX-5
The LX-5 is the most compact model in Roland’s premium LX series. It shares the Piano Reality Modeling engine with the LX-6 and LX9 and pairs it with the PHA-50 hybrid action and a four-speaker Projection system built into the cabinet, rather than a speaker box under the keyboard.
It also carries everything a modern home piano needs: Bluetooth audio and MIDI, USB audio recording, two headphone jacks, 394 built-in songs including lesson material, and the Roland Piano App.

The Keys
The PHA-50 Hybrid keyboard combines wood and molded materials with escapement, Ebony/Ivory Feel key surfaces and high-precision sensing. It’s one of the most durable actions Roland makes, and its long pivot gives an even response across the length of the key. Touch sensitivity is adjustable in 100 steps, with optional hammer response in 10.
The Sound
Piano Reality Modeling builds the piano tone in real time, so piano polyphony is unlimited and the sound can be shaped to your taste. The four-speaker Projection system pairs coaxial cabinet speakers with near-field speakers aimed at the player, for a sound that surrounds you instead of bouncing off the wall. Damper modeling and four ambience settings complete the picture.

Roland LX-5: Frequently Asked Questions
The LX-6 has Roland’s Hybrid Grand keyboard, a longer-pivot version of the PHA-50, and a five-speaker system with more output. It’s also deeper, taller and about 28 lb heavier. Both use the same Piano Reality Modeling engine.
Both use the PHA-50 action. The LX-5 adds the newer Piano Reality Modeling engine (the HP704 uses SuperNATURAL Piano Modeling) and a Projection speaker system with 90 W of output, against the HP704’s 60 W.
